Arthroscopy:
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique for assessing the interior of the joint. Arthroscopy provides the only option for directly examining the inside of the joint and allows rapid healing because of the small access sites. Surgical arthroscopy most commonly involves the removal of osteochondral fragments (chips), debridement of damaged articular surfaces, menisci and intra-articular ligaments, synovectomy and repair of intra-articular fractures.
Orthopedic Surgery:
Just a few years ago if a horse had a fracture, euthanasia was the only option available. Today many of these fractures can be fixed and the horse can return to their intended career. Most fractures can be repaired using internal fixiation (screws, plates, wire), but some can be managed with plain casts or transfixiation-pin casts. Caledon Equine Hospital can manage different fracture configurations your young or adult horse may suffer.
Laparoscopy:
Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure performed through small incisions in the abdomen, using specialized instruments. A pencil thin instrument called a laparoscope is used and it gives the surgeon a clear view on a TV monitor of the inside of the abdominal cavity. This surgery type can be performed standing with sedation or under general anesthetic.
Soft Tissue:
Soft Tissue surgery covers different types of procedures from repair of wounds, tumor removal (sarcoid) and eye surgery.
Respiratory & Upper Airway:
Conditions such as laryngeal hemiplegia (characterized by paralysis of the left arytenoid cartalage and vocal cord, 'roarer'), epiglottic entrapment, displacement of the soft palate, guttural pouch disease and sinus problems can be treated at Caledon Equine Hospital
Emergency Colic Surgery & Critical Care:
Caledon Equine Hospital will accept emergency cases of medical and surgical colics and critical care horses during our regularly scheduled business hours. Other emergencies such as fractures or major lacerations may also be seen during business hours.
